The runner up, also from the Agustinos stable, was Agustinos Reserve Merlot. With all the fruit and just a little more body than the winner, this is more a wine for the table. Enjoy with a slab of beef to show it at it's very best.

In third place was another Chilean wine. It's no wonder that everyone in the know is talking about Chile as the most exciting wine region in the World at the moment. Osadia Cachapoal Merlot. From the more northern wine producing regions, this wine is a true Bordeaux basher at an amazing price.

• Although a blend, one of the most famous wines in the world, Château Pétrus, is made almost completely of Merlot.
