Andre Brunel is such a calm, urbane gent that it is of no surprise to taste that his wines have the same kind of careful consideration and reserve that he does. But he's deceptively passionate too, and he pours as much of this passion into each of his wines, from his top Chateauneufs to this great little number.

Jurgen is a young German chap who came to visit the Capcanes co-op some years ago..and never left. When I went there I nearly didn't too! It is so unusual to get such incredible quality from a co-op (Spanish or otherwise) that this place, and the wines, are utterly compelling. And the 2005 vintage is sweet as a nut!

This is another wine I wasn't looking for but couldn't ignore when I found it at a tasting in Mendoza. Very upsetting, put me right off schedule. But then it is really good and exceptional value, and someone once told me that I work for you! Outrageous.

Plummeting prices for boutique Aussie wines mean that super premium, single vineyard boutique wines are affordable for the first time ever. Make hay while the sun shines, before the rest of the world finds out and prices go back up again.

The 2005 vintage won a Gold Medal and this one is every bit as good. A great food wine with the smoothness that makes this southern Rhone gem a must have. Limited supply so stock up now.

What could be better than a belt-and-braces Shiraz from its spiritual home, the Barossa Valley? Answer: nothing, if you like rich, decadent sweetly-fruited wine for taking the edge off your day. A perfect wine to drink as you cook, the real magic ingredient in your cooking.

Old world meets new. Refined fruit, so not aussie fruit bomb style but with plenty of cape character - wild bramble fruit with liquorice edge, fully ripe and mouthfilling. This is Werners project for us. Working at the super-premium Waterkloof winery he has been 'let loose' and is able to make the wines he wants rather than being tied to a commercial, marketing-driven remit.

This wine is blinding. Tiny yields, the sort of concentration that's mildly alarming which, given a bit of air and time in glass, rivals that of the greatest reds the Rhone has to offer. Truly. From some of the most unique vineyards I have ever seen, a solid slate hill that was dynamited by the previous owner. Vineyard meets moonscape.
